reactivity of metals Flashcards
reactivity series
chart showing decreasing reactivity
more reactive metal is
-more vigorous reaction is
-looses electron easily
larger gap = better faster vigorous reaction
metal + water
forms metal hydroxide
and hydrogen
observation: floats fizzing potassium = purple flame water turns from green to purple
metals + acid
forms salt and hydrogen
observation:
bubbles
anything under hydrogen in reactivity series does not react
series
potassium sodium lithium calcium magnesium aluminum carbon zinc iron tin lead hydrogen copper silver gold platinum
oxidation
metals react with oxygen
metal oxide forms
metal gains oxygen
losing electrons
reduction
loss of oxygen
gain of electrons
combustion of magnesium
magnesium glows until reaction = done
oxygen reacts with magnesium = magnesium oxide
oxidation
displacement
more reactive metal can displace less reactive metal from compound
eg magnesium + copper sulphate
observation :
magnesium coated with copper
blue colour of solution fades
copper sulphate replaces by colourless magnesium sulphate
