Reactivity Of Metals Flashcards
If a metal reacts with water, what two products are produced?
Metal hydroxide and hydrogen
If a metal reacts with acid, what two products are produced?
Salt and hydrogen
What are the two most reactive metals and the two least reactive metals?
Most: potassium and sodium
Least: silver and gold
What happens during a displacement reaction?
A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salts in a solution. It is exothermic
Why are displacement reactions redox reactions?
The atoms of the more reactive metal are oxidised (lose electrons)
The atoms of the less reactive metal are reduced (gain electrons)
What is an ore?
A rock that contains enough of a metal for its extraction to be economical
How is iron extracted from an ore?
Through displacement. Carbon displaced it using a blast furnace
Describe how aluminium is extracted.
Electrolysis (as it’s more reactive than carbon).
Aluminium oxide it dissolved in molten cryolite. This reduces the temp for electrolysis.
At the cathode, aluminium ions gain electrons and are reduced to aluminium atoms
At the anode, oxide ions lose electrons and are oxidised to form oxygen gas (reacts with graphite anodes - must be replaced regularly)
Describe the process of phytoextraction
1) metal compounds absorbed by plant roots
2) plants burned
3) ash contains metal compounds
What is bioleaching?
A biological method of metal extraction using bacteria
