(P2)Groups In The Periodic Table Flashcards
Describe the physical properties of alkali metals (GROUP 1)
Good conductors of electricity, shiny, soft, low melting points
What do alkali metals form when they react with water?
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Why does the reactivity of alkali metals increase as you go down group 1?
The number of electron shells increases, so there is a weaker force of attraction between the outer electrons and the nucleus (due to the shielding of inner electron shells), so they are lost more easily
What group are the halogens in?
Group 7
Halogens react with metals to produce compounds called what?
Metal halides
Why do halogens get less reactive as you move down group 7?
Outer shells get further away from nucleus, more shielding from inner electrons, force of attraction between nucleus and electrons gets weaker, electrons gained less easily, less reactive
How can you demonstrate a halogen displacement reaction?
Why is this a redox reaction?
Add a halogen solution to a metal halide solution, then see if the mixture darkens.
Because oxidation and reduction are occurring at the same time
Why are the noble gases inert?
They have a full outer shell of electrons so they don’t need to react
