Reaction Types Flashcards
Combination Reactions
When 2 or more reactants form 1 product
Decomposition Reactions
A compound breaks down into 2 or more substances. Usually results from heating or electrolysis.
Single Displacement Reaction
When an atom or ion of one compound id replaced by an atom of another element (special case is redox)
Double Displacement Reaction
When elements from two different compounds displace each other to form two new compounds. One of the compounds is removed from the solution as a solid or gas
Metathesis Reaction
Double displacement reaction
Neutralization Reactions
Specific double displacement that occurs when an acid reacts with a base to produce a solution of a salt and water
Oxidation-Reduction
The transfer of electrons from one species to another
If the element is oxidized, its oxidation number will ____
Increase
If the element is reduced, its oxidation number will _____
Decrease
