Reaction Rates Flashcards
Collision theory
Molocules must collide with sufficient energy and with the correct orientation for a reaction to occur
Activation energy
minimum amount of Ek
r4f that particles must have to react when they collide
Heterogenous catalyst
A catalyst that is in a different physical state/phase as reactants
Catalyst
A substance that increases rate of reaction by providing an alternate reaction pathway with a lower EA. Catalyst is chemically unchanged at end of reaction
Le Chatelier’s principle
If a closed system is in equilibrium , and a change is made to any of the conditions, then the system responds to counteract that change
Dynamic Equillibrum
Rate of foreward reaction is the same as the rate of backwards reaction so [products] and [reactants] stays constant
How do heterogenous catalysts work
Reactants adsorbed onto surface of catalyst
Reactants react on surface of catalysts in a reaction that requires less Ea than if reactants weren’t on surface of catalyst
Reactants are desorbed from surface of catalyst
