Organic Chemistry Flashcards
General formula
The algebraic formula of a homologous series
Homolodous series
a family of orgnaic compounds with the same functional group and each subsequent number differing by CH2
Structural formula
The compound showed carbon by carbon with side groups listen in between
Displayed formula
The compound shown with every bond drawn out, giving the complete strcuture
Skeletal formula
The compounds shown without hydrogens and carbons represented by a corner of the chain, any other groups are drawn out in full
Aromatic compounds
Compounds with a benzene ring
Alicylic compounds
An organic compounds that contains C and H jioned together in a non-aromatic ring
Alkly groups
A hydrocarbon fragment with the general formula CnH2n+1
Saturated compounds
A compound containing only single bonds
Structural ismomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different arrangement of atoms
Alkane
A hydrocarbon with the general formula CnH2n + 2 and has only C-C and C-H bonds
Sigma bond
A type of bond formed when two orbitals from neighboring atoms overlap, forming a new orbital directly between the two atoms
Electrophile
A species that can accept a pair of electrons
Free radical
A particle with an unpaired electron
Photochemical reaction
A chemical reaction started by light
Stereoisomers
Compounds with the same strcutural formula but with a different arrangement of atoms in space
