Q

What is Recombinant Technolgy used for ?

A

With this technology, a gene or multiple genes can be identified, cut, and inserted into the genome of another organism. Using this technology, the first drugs of medical biotechnology were produced, namely human insulin.

Q

Application of Recombinant Technology

A

Recombinant DNA technology has also proven important to the production of vaccines and protein therapies such as human insulin, interferon and human growth hormone.

It is also used to produce clotting factors for treating haemophilia and in the development of gene therapy.

Q

Another application of Recombinat Technology

A

gene therapy for replacement of defective genes.

gene therapy aims to treat/cure/prevent disease by replacing a defective gene with a normal one using recombinant DNA technology.

Most human clinical trials in gene therapy are still in the research stage

Scientists agree that this is the most powerful application of rDNA technology, but have been cautious in its application due to associated risks as exemplified by the case of Jesse Gelsinger

Q

What are advantages of this technique ?

A

such as the ability to improve health and improve the quality of food.

But there are downsides as well, such as the potential for using personal genetic information without consent.

What are some disadvantages of this technique ?

A

But there are downsides as well, such as the potential for using personal genetic information without consent

Ethical issue - Ensuring safety of patients in clinical trials has led to the development of better risk assessment in clinical trials - Lengthy

Application- Forensic

A

has also been used in forensic science to identify a criminal suspect using DNA samples obtained from various biological sources at the crime scene; this test is called genetic fingerprinting.
