Rationale Flashcards
Why should you ensure the patient’s airway is patent?
To ensure air entry into the lungs and prevent hypoxia, which may cause brain injury
Why would you administer oxygen as a breathing intervention?
High flow oxygen would be applied to prevent and treat hypoxia and secondary hypoxic brain and vital organ injury
How can the positioning of a conscious child aid air entry?
Sitting the child up aids chest expansion and drops abdomen contents
What else can be done to aid breathing?
Nebulised bronchodilators and anticholinergics back to back for the first two hours
Steroids, oral if tolerated, or IV
What could be the reasons for circulatory compromise?
- 4 T’s and 4 H’s
Tension pneumothorax
Tamponade
Thrombosis
Toxins
Hypoxia
Hypo/hyperkalaemia
Hypo/hyperthermia
Hypovolaemia
Why may children present with tachycardia?
Children may present with tachycardia and their heart rate may increase to compensate for a small stroke volume and increased oxygen demand
What IV access may be needed for circulatory intervention?
Two wide bore cannulae or an IO if poorly perfused and unable to gain IV access
What is the 3 in and 3 out method for sepsis?
Give - oxygen, antibiotics, fluids
Take - blood cultures, lactate, urine output
Why would administer broad-spectrum antibiotics?
- Responds to a wide range of bacteria
- Acts against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
Why would you give crystalloid fluids instead of colloid fluids?
Crystalloid fluids, including plasmalyte, hartman’s and sodium chloride 0.9%, are more readily available than colloid fluids, such as blood, FFP and platelets due to need for cross-matching
