Patent, partially obstructed or completely obstructed
How do you assess the airway?
LOOK, LISTEN, FEEL
When assessing the airway, what are you looking for?
Chest rise and fall/chest movement
Any visible obstruction
When assessing the airway, what are you listening for?
Listen for airway noises
What are the airway noises?
Stridor, gurgling, snoring
When assessing the airway, what are you feeling for?
Can you feel breath on your face for 10 seconds?
What are the airway manoeuvres and when are they needed?
Head tilt / chin lift or jaw thrust
Only needed if the patient has a reduced level of consciousness
What interventions are needed when you hear snoring?
Reposition the airway
Airway opening manoeuvres
What interventions are needed when you hear gurgling?
Suction any secretions
What are you using to suction?
Using a soft tip catheter at 12-20 kPa via wall suction
What interventions are needed when you hear stridor?
Seek immediate senior assistance, don’t suction, or upset child, allow them to position however is comfortable
