A
  • Fluids for low blood pressure
  • Paracetamol for fever
  • Antibiotics to help aid the body to fight infection
  • Blood cultures to identify the cause of septic response
  • Oxygen can be given if child’s oxygen requirement increases

What interventions would you implement for a child with hypovolaemic shock?

A
  • Fluids to increase blood volume, and therefore increase blood pressure
  • Give the patient blood to stabilise blood volume
  • Apply pressure to wound to stop/control blood loss
  • Identify any electrolyte imbalances to determine choice of replacement fluids

What interventions would you implement for a child with asthma?

A
  • 15 litres high flow oxygen via non-rebreathe face mask with reservoir bag to prevent hypoxia
  • Repositioning to aid chest expansion
  • Inhaled beta 2 agonists, salbutamol, via inhaler or nebuliser, to aid bronchodilation and consider adding ipratropium bromide and magnesium sulphate
  • Consider steroids, eg oral prednisolone if tolerated or IV hydrocortisone
