What is AVPU?
Alert
Responsive to Voice
Responsive to Pain
Unresponsive
What is GCS?
Glasgow Coma Scale
How does GCS relate to AVPU
Alert = GCS 15/15
Voice = GCS 12/15
Pain = GCS 8/15
Unresponsive = GCS 3/15
What should you assess when assessing disability?
Pupils, Posture, Blood Glucose Level
What are you checking when assessing pupils?
Are the pupils reactive to light and dilating?
Are the pupil reactions equal or unequal?
Are the pupil reactions sluggish?
What are you looking for when assessing a patient’s posture?
-Dystonia - uncontrolled muscle movements / spasms
-Hypotonia - decreased muscle tone
-Decerebrate - extended arms and legs
-Decorticate - flexed arms, extended legs
What would you do if a seizure lasted longer than 5 minutes?
IV lorazepam 0.1mics/kg
When measuring blood glucose, what are the normal parameters?
4-7mmols/litre
What are the interventions for high blood glucose?
Test for ketones and ? DKA
Administer insulin
