Rational choice 12 marker Flashcards
Relevance
People vote rationally by using party manifestos, rational voters will look at proposed policies and then vote based on who they think would benefit them the most.
Eg- in 2019 the conservative manifesto pledges to get Brexit done, then went on to win 365 seats in the election.
Irrelevance
Many don’t vote rationally due to party loyalty for a specific party, as they have early attachment often from family having voted for them.
Eg- in 2017 only 12% of voters said they didn’t identify with any specific party.
Relevance
People vote retrospectively by judging a candidate based on their past performance.
Eg- David Cameron was retrospectively judge as doing well as prime minister as he was already in Gov.
Irrelevance
People can’t vote retrospectively for smaller parties who have never been in power.
Eg- the Green Party has never been the governing party.
