Rates Of Reaction 2 Flashcards
What is collision theory?
The energy of collisions and the frequency affect the rate of reaction
What is an effective collision?
One that results in the formation of products
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy that colliding particles must have for a reaction to occur
What is the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution closely related to?
Activation energy
What is the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution?
How particles in a gas react during chemical reaction
How does temperature affect rate of reaction?
1)Gives particles more energy and so therefore more of them have enough energy to react when they collide
2)many more molecules have enough energy to react when they collide. This means increasing temperature only by a few degrees could double the rate
What is endothermic reaction?
Absorbs energy
What is a exothermic reaction
Releases energy
What is the nature of reactants?
Chemical properties of the substances involved in a reaction and how these properties affect the speed of reaction
What is an ionic compound?
Reacts faster because ions are already separated
What is a covalent compound?
React slower and they need to break down bonds
What is the rate of reaction influenced by?
1)reactivity of the reactants
2)bond strength
What substance is in the experiment of the effect of concentration?
Sodium thiosulfate solution + hydrochloric acid
What axis should the inverse of time be plotted on
Y-axis
What is the procedure for effect of concentration?
1) places 100cm^3 of sodium thiosulfate into a conical flask
2)add 10cm^3 of hydrochloric acid to the flash, while starting a stop clock
3)swirl flask and place on piece of white paper marked with a cross
4)record the time taken for the cross to disappear
5)repeat the experiment using different concentration of of sodium thiosulfate solution
6)record results
What is a reaction profile
Graph that shows the change in energy of a chemical reaction with time reaction progresses
