Rates of Reaction Flashcards
Rate of reaction
change in concentration per unit time of any one reactant or product.
Instantaneous rate of reaction
rate of reaction at any one particular time during the reaction.
Catalyst
substance that alters the rate of chemical reaction but is not consumed in the reaction.
Enzyme
substance that is produced by a living cell and acts as a biological catalyst.
Homogeneous catalysis
both the reactants and the catalyst are in the same phases
Heterogeneous catalysis
reactants and the catalyst are in different phases.
Autocatalysis
one of the products of the reaction acts as a catalyst for the reaction.
Activation energy
minimum combined energy of particles for effective collisions.
Adsorption theory
one or more reactants are adsorbed onto the surface of the catalyst. Reactants form new stronger bonds between each other and product diffuse away.
Effective collision
collision which reaches activation energy.
