Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Compound
substance that is made up of 2 or more different elements combined together chemically.
Octet Rule
when bonding occurs, atoms tend to reach an electron arrangement with 8 electrons in the outermost energy level.
Ion
charged atom or group of atoms.
Cation
positively charged ion.
Anion
negatively charged ion.
Ionic bond
force of attraction between completely charged ions in a compound. Ionic bonds are always formed by the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another.
Molecule
group of atoms joined together, smallest particle of an element that can exist independently.
Valency
number of atoms of hydrogen/any other monovalent element with which each atom of the element combines.
Electronegativity
relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
Polar covalent bond
unequal sharing of the pair of electrons.
Sigma
formed from head-on overlap of orbitals, stronger than pi
Pi
formed from side-ways overlap of orbitals
Bond energy
average amount of energy stored in a mole of a bond of a particular type in a chemical species into separate atoms.
Intramolecular
forces between atoms in molecules
Intermolecular
forces between molecules.
