Fuels Flashcards
Organic chemistry
the study if the compounds of carbon.
Hydrocarbon
compound that contains carbon and hydrogen only.
Fossil fuels
fuels that were formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
Homologous series
general formula, similar chemical properties.
Unsaturated compound
contains one or more double or triple bonds between the atoms in the molecule.
Saturated compounds
contains only single bonds between the atoms in the molecule.
Octane number
of a fuel is a measure of the tendency of the fuel to resist knocking.
Catalytic cracking
breaking down of long-chain hydrocarbon molecules by the action of heat and catalysts into short-chain molecules for which there is a greater demand.
Isomerisation
changing to different structure(s) that have the same molecular formula.
Structural isomer
same molecular formula but different structure.
Knocking the engine
petrol autoigniting
Fractionation of crude oil
separation by distillation
LPG
liquid petroleum gas
Primary alcohol
one carbon atom attached to carbon to which the OH is attached
Secondary alcohol
two carbon atoms attached to other carbon to which the OH is attached.
Elimination Reaction
one in which a small molecule is removed from a larger molecule to leave a double bond in the larger molecule.
Addition Reaction
one in which 2 or more molecules react together to form a single molecule.
