Rates of reaction Flashcards
What are the signs of a chemical reaction
Colour change, temperature change, gas given off, a new substance formed and a solid formed (precipitate)
What are the factors that affect the speed of a chemical reaction
A catylist, temperature, concentration and partcial size
What is the gas test for carbon dioxide
Turns lime water milky/cloudy
What is the gas test for hydrogen
Burns with a pop
What is the gas test for oxygen
Relights a glowing splint
What is the equation for the rate of a reaction
Rate = mass of gas’s produced
———————————
Time
How do you calculate the average rate
Average rate = change in mass
———————-
Change in time
What must happen for a reaction to occur
In order for a reaction to occur reactant particles must collide
What must happen for a reaction to speed up
We need to increase the number of collisions
What does it mean when we use partical size to increase the collisions and how would you do this
You increase the surface area of one of the reactants by grinding it into a powder
What does it mean when we speed up a reaction using concentration
When there are more reactant particals in a given volume of space
What happens when you increase the temperature of a partical
They have more energy and this makes more collisions
