Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What are the 6 signs a chemical reaction is occurring?
Bubbling/fizzing, change in pH, temperature change, colour change, produces an electrical current, precipitate forms
What is the reaction rate?
How fast a chemical reaction occurs
How can the reaction rate be measured?
By finding out how quickly reactants are used up or how quickly products are formed
How must particles collide for an effective collision?
With sufficient energy, at the right orientation and they must collide.
If the frequency of effective collisions increases, what happens to the rate of reaction?
It increases.
What are the three factors that affect the rate of reaction?
The concentration of the reacting solution, the temperature of the reaction solution and the surface area of solids
How does an increase in concentration increase the rate of reaction?
When the concentration of the reacting solution is increased, the number of particles in the same volume increases meaning there are more particles available for collision, so the frequency of successful collisions increases, increasing the rate of reaction.
How does an increase in temperature increase the rate of reaction?
As the temperature of the reacting liquid increases, the kinetic energy of the particles increases so they move faster. This increases the energy of particles so they have sufficient energy to collide. This increases the frequency of effective collisions and increases the rate of reaction.
How does an increase in the surface area increase the rate of reaction?
As the size of the solid particles decreases, the surface area of the particles increases so there is an increase of the frequency of successful collisions, therefore increase in the rate of reaction.
