Rate Of Reaction Flashcards
Two rules of collision theory
1- The two particles must collide
2- The collision must have energy greater than the activation energy
Activation Energy
The minimum energy needed to start a reaction
Factors affecting rate of reaction
1- Temperature 2- Concentration 3- Pressure 4- Surface area 5- Catalysts
What will Temp do to the rate of reaction? (1)
Increasing Temperature increases the rate of reaction. It will cause particles:
- To have more kinetic energy
- To move faster
- To have more frequent collisions
What will concentration do to the rate of reaction ? (2)
When concentration in increased, the rate of reaction increases. This causes more frequent collisions, leading to faster rates.
What will Pressure/Surface area do to the rate of reaction? (3/4)
Increasing Pressure/Surface area increases the rate of reaction.
-Both lead to more frequent collisions and more successful collisions, causing a faster rate
What would a Catalyst do to the rate of reaction?
More particles have energy greater than the activation energy so there are more successful collisions.
What is a Catalyst?
- A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up.
- Works by providing a different path for the reaction with a lower activation energy
