Key Definitions Flashcards
Hydrocarbon -
A compound that contains ONLY hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Alkanes general formula -
CnH2n + 2
Alkenes general formula -
CnH2n
4 Features of a homologous series -
1- Trend in physical properties
2- Similar chemical properties
3- Same general formula
4- Each successive member of the series differs by CH2
Saturated -
Contains only single bonds (alkanes)
Unsaturated -
Contains double bonds (alkenes)
Isomers -
Same molecular formula, different structural formula
What is Diffusion?
The random mixing and moving of particles in liquids
What is an element?
Substances that cannot be broken down into anything simpler because they are made up of only one small particle
What is a mixture?
Contains two or more substances
What is a molecule?
the building blocks of the substances around us
What is a compound?
Formed when atoms join together in a chemical reaction.
Polymer -
Monomers joined together
Two basic types ate addition and condensation
Monomoer -
Join together to make polymers
Functional group -
Group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound
