Rate of reaction Flashcards
1
Q
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
A
How fast the reactants are changed into products
2
Q
What is activation energy?
A
The minimum amount of energy that particles need to react.
3
Q
What does the rate of a chemical reaction depend on?
A
- The collision frequency (how often they collide)
- The energy transferred during a collision
4
Q
What factors influence the rate of reaction?
A
- Temperature
- Concentration of a solution or pressure of a gas
- Surface area
- Catalyst
5
Q
How does increasing the temperature affect the rate of reaction?
A
- When the temperature is increased, the particles will be moving faster
- If they are moving faster they are also colliding more frequently
- Also the faster they move the more energy they have, so more of the collisions will have enough energy to make the reaction happen
6
Q
How will increasing the concentration or pressure affect the rate of reaction?
A
- If a solution is more concentrated, that means that there are more particles in the same volume
- Similarly, when the pressure of a gas is increased, it means that the same number of particles occupy a smaller space
- This makes the collisions more frequent
7
Q
How will increasing the surface area affect the rate of reaction?
A
- If one of the reactants is a solid, then breaking it up into smaller pieces will increase its surface area to volume ratio
- This means that for the same volume, particles will have a greater area to work on
- Therefore, there will be more frequent collisions
8
Q
How does using a catalyst affect the rate of reaction?
A
- Catalyst decrease the activation energy required for a reaction to occur
- This means that more particles will have enough energy needed for a chemical reaction to happen
