Q

How does increasing the temperature affect the rate of reaction?

A
  • When the temperature is increased, the particles will be moving faster
  • If they are moving faster they are also colliding more frequently
  • Also the faster they move the more energy they have, so more of the collisions will have enough energy to make the reaction happen

Q

How will increasing the concentration or pressure affect the rate of reaction?

A
  • If a solution is more concentrated, that means that there are more particles in the same volume
  • Similarly, when the pressure of a gas is increased, it means that the same number of particles occupy a smaller space
  • This makes the collisions more frequent

Q

How will increasing the surface area affect the rate of reaction?

A
  • If one of the reactants is a solid, then breaking it up into smaller pieces will increase its surface area to volume ratio
  • This means that for the same volume, particles will have a greater area to work on
  • Therefore, there will be more frequent collisions

Q

How does using a catalyst affect the rate of reaction?

A
  • Catalyst decrease the activation energy required for a reaction to occur
  • This means that more particles will have enough energy needed for a chemical reaction to happen
