Carboxylic acids Flashcards
1
Q
What are carboxylic acids?
A
Carboxylic acids are a homologous series of compounds that all have ‘COOH’ as their functional group
2
Q
What are the first four carboxylic acids?
A
Methanoic acid, Ethanoic acid, Propanoic acid, and Butanoic acid
3
Q
How do carboxylic acids react?
A
- Carboxylic acids react to produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide
- The salts formed in these reaction end in ‘anoate’
- eg, methanoic acid will form a methanoate
4
Q
How do carboxylic acids react with water?
A
- Carboxylic acids can dissolve in water
- When they dissolve they ionise and release H+ ions
- However they do not ionise completely, so they form weak acidic solutions
5
Q
What are esters?
A
Esters are formed from an alcohol and a carboxylic acid with the functional group ‘COO’
6
Q
Name one ester
A
Ethyl ethanoate
