Rate of diffusion Flashcards
factors affecting rate of diffusion
temperature (increase)
concentration gradient (steep)
surface area to volume ratio (large)
diffusion pathway (short
increasing the temperature
this increases the kinetic energy of the particles so they move more quickly
increasing the surface area to volume ratio
there is more surface available for particles to move across therefore can get from one side to the other faster
concentration gradient
substances diffuse faster if there is a big difference in the concentration
pathway of diffusion
substances diffuse more quickly when they haven’t as far to move
how to calculate the surface area to volume ratio of a cube
(length x breadth x height)
multiply answer by six to work out the whole surface area
calculate the volume (length x breadth x height)
compare them in a ratio (Surface Area:Volume)
