Characteristics Flashcards
1
Q
characteristics of plants cells?
A
- multi-cellular organisms
- cells contain chloroplasts
- are able to carry out photosynthesis
- cells have cellulose cell walls
- store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose
2
Q
characteristics of animal cells?
A
- multi-cellular organisms
- cells do not contain chloroplasts
- cells aren’t able to carry out photosynthesis
- have no cell walls
- are able to move from one place to another
- often store carbohydrates as glycogen
3
Q
characteristics of fungi cells?
A
- are not able to carry out photosynthesis
- usually organised into a mycelium made from thread-like structures called hyphae
- can contain many nuclei
- feed by extracellular secretion of digestive enzymes also known as saprotrophic nutrition
4
Q
characteristics of protoctists?
A
- microscopic single celled organisms
- different characteristics depending on which protoctists
- amoeba lives in pond water and has animal cell features
- chlorella are more like plant cells
5
Q
characteristics of bacteria?
A
- microscopic single celled organisms
- have a cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm and plasmids
- don’t have a nucleus but have a chromosome of DNA
- some can carry out photosynthesis
- most feed of other living or dead organisms
6
Q
characteristics of viruses?
A
- are not living organisms
- are living particles
- smaller than bacteria
- they are parasitic and can only reproduce inside a living cell
- infect every living organisms
- come in different shapes and sizes
- have no cellular structure but do have a protein coat
7
Q
Characteristics of living organisms?
A
- are the building blocks of living organisms
- come in different sizes
- either made up of one cell (uni-cellular) or many cell types (multi-cellular)
8
Q
characteristics of yeast?
A
- microscopic
- unicellular
- has a nucleus containing the genetic material, cytoplasm, ribosomes, mitochondria and a cell membrane.
- has a vacuole and cell wall
- stores food in the form of glygogen
- reproduce by asexual budding which involves a new yeast cell growing our from the original cell to form a new seperate yeast organisms
- can survive without a lot of oxygen available by anaerobic respiration
- the anaerobic respiration of yeast is called fermentation
- yeast is used to make bread
