Fungi Flashcards
1
Q
Typical parts of fungal cells
A
cell membrane nucleus cytoplasm glycogen storage vacuole budding large permanent vacuole cell wall
2
Q
multicellular fungi (mucor)
A
Examples:
Mucor which causes bread mould
penicillium which produces penicillin which is an example of an antibiotic
3
Q
structure
A
- composed of thread like structures called hyphae which together form a network called a mycellium
- do not photosynthesize as do not contain chloroplast
- cell walls are made from chitin
- have many nuclei in the cytoplasm
- like plants they also contain a vacuole
- stores carbohydrates as glycogen
4
Q
reproduction:
A
- the fungi’s bodies produce spores
- when these spores land, new hyphae grow branching to form a new mycellium
5
Q
nutrition
A
- saprotrophic nutrition. the digestion of dead organic material outside the body
- fungi extracellularly secrete
