Rate equations Flashcards
What is the equation for rate of reaction?
change in concentration/ time
What is order?
the contribution of each species to the rate of reaction
What is zero order?
Rate is unaffected by changes
- as concentration changes rate stays the same
What is first order
As concentration changes by a factor the rate changes by the same factor
What is second order?
As the concentration changes by a factor the rate changes by that factor squared
What is the rate equation?
rate = k[A]^m[B]^n
What is the overall order
the sum of all orders (m+n)
what are the units for rate of reaction?
mol dm^-3 s^-1
What is the rate constant (K)?
it relates the reactant concentrations to the rate (at a particular temperature)
What is the relationship between the rate and K?
as the rate increases so does K
(the larger the K value the faster the reactiona
In a mechanism what is the catalyst?
used up in one step and re-made in a latet step
In a mechanism what is the intermediate?
Made in one step then used up in a later step
what is the the determining step?
the slow step
What does a Zero order time graph look like?
Straight line
What does a first order time graph look like?
has a curve
(bc rate change is equal to concentration change)
