Kinetics Flashcards
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy required for the reaction to occur.
What is the rate of reaction?
the frequency of successful collisions in a reaction.
What is the Rate of reaction Calculation?
ROR = Change in concentration
__________________________
time
In what ways can the frequency of collisions be increased?
Concentration
Pressure
Surface Area
Temperature
Increasing concentration will..
•increase the number of reactant particles in a given volume
•this increases the frequency of collisions • • •
•therefore more successful collisions in a given time.
What happens when you increase the pressure?
•higher pressure creates a lower volume (vice versa)
•more particles in a given volume
•more successful collisions in a given time
How can pressure be increased?
• By using a smaller reaction vessel, this doesn’t change the temperature
• By increasing the number of molecules
Increasing the Surface Area will..
•increase the number of reactant particles
•this increases the frequency of collisions
•therefore more successful collisions in a given time.
Increasing the temperature will..
• give particles more energy
• so more particles will have energy greater than the activation energy
• thus MANY more successful collisions in a given time
What are the laws of the Maxwell Boltzmann Distribution
• particles will only react if they have the activation energy when they collide
• particles undergo random collisions where energy is transferred
• this means particles will have different energies
What is the peak of the Maxwell Boltzman Curve?
The most common energy.
At what point in the curve is the mean?
Where the curve begins to drop.
Where does the graph start?
At the origin, there are no particles with zero energy.
What does the area under the curve represent?
The total number of particles.
What happened to the Maxwell Boltzmann curve when temperature is increased?
• peak of the curve moves to the right
• the asymptote is HIGHER as more particles will have Ea
