Rat Dissection 3: The Circulatory System, Venous, Arterial And Respiratory Systems Flashcards
Which is the only vein to carry oxygenated blood?
The pulmonary vein
Which is the only artery to carry deoxygenated blood?
The pulmonary artery
Thymus gland function in rat
- It assists with the maturation of the immune system in young rats
- has a lymphoid organ -> produces T-lymphocytes
Function of thymus gland in adult human
- produces & develops T-lymphocytes = important white blood cell
= important to immune system
Function of left anterior vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the left side of the body (from the brain to the lungs) to the heart
Function of the left anterior vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the right side of the body (from the brain to the lungs) to the heart
Function of the posterior vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the bottom/ tail of the body to the heart
Function of the left pulmonary vein
Transports oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Function of the right pulmonary vein
Transports oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
How do you account for the differences in thickness
- ventricles = thicker muscular wall = blood pumped out at greater pressure to rest of body
Why are veins darker in colour and thinner walled
- deoxygenated blood = darker in colour
- lower pressure = thinner walls
Which venous system drains the alimentary canal and it’s associated organs?
The portal venous system
What causes asymmetry between the right and left adrenal veins
Look for answer
What is the function of the thyroid gland?
- makes, stores and releases thyroxin
= aids in metabolic activities
What is the function of the parathyroid gland?
- regulates calcium levels
- no effect on thyroid
