Staph has two important toxins, ET-A and ET-B. What are they involved in?

A

ET-A (exfoliative toxin-A) – Lysogenized Phase → Bullous Impetigo

ET-B – Plasmid → Scalded Skin Syndrome (Usually neonates and young children)
•Ritter’s syndrome – form of scalded skin syndrome specifically stemming from umbilical cord infection

A

Caused by parvovirus

presents with “slapped cheeks”

fever and joint pain

A

Group A Strep

Begins with fever and sore throat

Rash on neck and chest, RED tongue

What is SSSS (Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome?

A

Caused by staph infection which produces toxin, exfoliatin-B

Presents as: generalized erythematous rash, exfoliation of the skin and conjunctival redness.
Face and around the mouth is characteristic
NO FEVER
Treat with beta-lactam resistant or penicillinase resistant penicillin (ampicillin, nafcillin)
