Hand and Palm - Severson Flashcards
Just general concepts. I won't try and use images here. Do that on your own.
List the joints of the fingers, proximal to distal:
Metacarpophalangeal joint (MP) - between metacarpals and proximal phalanges
Proximal Interphalangeal joint (PIP) - between proximal phalanges and the middles phalanges
Distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) - between the middle phalanges and distal phalanges
Name the two rows of the carpal bones of the hand. Radial to ulnar side, starting proximally.
Scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform
Trapezium, trapezoid, captitate, hamate
Which nerves passes through the carpal tunnel?
median nerve
What physical maneuver is a classic test for carpel tunnel syndrome?
Phalen’s maneuver
Which is deeper? Transverse carpel ligament or palmar carpel ligament?
Transverse carpel ligament is deeper (forms the carpel tunnel)
What branch of what nerve supplies the thenar muscle of the hand?
The recurrent branch of the median nerve supplies the thenar muscles
Where is Guyon’s canal?
AND
What symptoms result from Guyon’s canal syndrome?
It is the ulnar canal passing under the ulnar side of the palmar carpel ligament.
Symptoms include hypoesthesia of the medial one and one-half fingers and weakness of intrinsic hand muscles
Where do the flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor pollicis longus, and flexor digitorum profundus insert on the hand?
The tendon of the flexor pollicis longus terminates at the base of the distal phalanx of the thumb
the tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis split over the body of the proximal phalanx and inserts into the base of the middle phalanx
The tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus pass through the split in the tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis and continue distally to insert into the base of the distal phalanx
What are vincula?
connective tissue bundles that extend from the tendons of the flexor digitorum muscle to the periosteum of the bone. It is thought to carry a blood supply from the bone to the tendons.
What do the lumbricals do?
Lumbricals flex the MP joint and extend the PIP and DIP joints
