Describe type 1 FGM
partial or total removal of the clitoris
Describe type 2 FGM
partial or total removal of the clitoris, with or without excision of the labia minora and or majora
Describe type 3 FGM
Narrowing of the vaginal opening with creation of a covering seal - by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and majora, with or without excision of the clitoris
Describe type 4 FGM?
all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non medical purposes
Describe the medical issues associated with FGM particularly type 3
difficulty with VE in pregnancy and labour
difficulty with VE for routine examinations such as cervical smear screening
difficulty with intrapartum procedures (FSE, amniotomy)
difficulty with catheterisation
increased risk of perineal trauma
increased risk of episiotomy
increased risk of C/s
