hypersensitive
what are the adverse effects of ranitidine?
HA, blodd count changes, GI effects; hepatocellualar, cholestatic, or mixed hepatitis
what health status do you assess with ranitidine?
assess symptoms prior to administration of drug

pregnancy category B

assess diet and smoking habits

how do you maximize the therapeutic effects of ranitidine?
if both ranitidine and antacids are prescribed, given them at least 2 hours apart to prevent decreased absorption of ranitidine. preferably, take antacid 2 hours after ranitidine.
how do you minimize the adverse effects of ranitidine?
- monitor serum trough levels in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
- administer IV ranitidine slowly to prevent hypotension and cardiac arrhythmias
- common adverse effect that can be severe is HA
what are the patient and family education of ranitidine?
- instruct pts to take the drug exactly as directed
- caution patients not to take double dose if a dose is missed
