Ranges of Motion Flashcards
Elevation
Moving a body part upward. For example, shrugging the shoulders.
Depression
Moving a body part downward. For example, lowering the shoulders after a shrug.
Protraction
Moving a body part forward. For example, pushing the jaw or shoulder blade forward.
Redaction
Moving a body part backward. For example, pulling the jaw or shoulder blade backward.
Flexion
The action of bending a joint, decreasing the angle between two body parts. For example, bending the elbow or knee.
Extension
The action of straightening a joint, increasing the angle between two body parts. For example, straightening the elbow or knee.
Adduction
Movement toward the midline of the body. For example, bringing the arm or leg back towards the body.
Abduction
Movement away from the midline of the body. For example, lifting the arm or leg sideways away from the body.
External Rotation
Rotating a joint away from the center of the body. For example, rotating the shoulder or hip outward.
Internal Rotation
Rotating a joint towards the center of the body. For example, rotating the shoulder or hip inward.
Pronation
Rotating the forearm or foot so the palm or sole is facing downward or backward. For example, turning the palm down.
Supination
Rotating the forearm or foot so the palm or sole is facing upward or forward. For example, turning the palm up.
Radial Deviation
movement of the wrist towards the radius, or the thumb side of the forearm
Ulnar Deviation
movement of the wrist towards the ulna, or the little finger side of the forearm
Radial Abduction
movement of the thumb away from the palm of the hand in the plane of the palm, towards the radial (thumb) side.
