Range of motion Flashcards
Precautions ROM
Local, acute inflammatory or infectious process.
Patients on pain medication or muscle relaxants.
In a case of marked osteoporosis.
In assessing subluxed or hypermobile joint.
In very painful conditions.
In haemophilic patients.
In the region of a haematoma.
In assessing joint where bony ankylosis is suspected.
Immediately after an injury where there has been a disruption to the soft tissue.
Explain the concepts of active and passive insufficiency using of shoulder flexion as an example.
Normal range : 0-180
When the muscle cannot cause adequate tension at all joints, it is called active insufficiency. Whereas passive insufficiency is when the opposing muscle becomes stretched to a point at which the muscle can no longer lengthen or cause movement.
Range of motion for normal shoulder flexion
Shoulder Flexion: 0-180
Shoulder flexion = 0˚-120˚ (A); 0˚–130˚ (P)
