Random shizzzz - oedema / rhythm / anaphylaxis Flashcards

1
Q

What is oedema

A

Accumulation of fluid in extravascular space
Effusion if in body cavity
If bilateral implies systemic disease with increased venous pressure e.g. RHF or decreased oncotic pressure (any cause of decreased albumin)

17
Q

What causes hypothermia

A
Exposure to cold
Inadequate insuliation
Newborn
Elderly
Bypass
GA
Hypothyroid
SUbstance abuse
Homeless
Impaired mental status
18
Q

What are the symptoms

A
SHivering
Cold
Slurred speech
Tachycardia
Tachypnoea
Hypertension
Resp depression and Brady if severe
Limp / poor feed in baby
19
Q

How do you investigate

A
Temperature
ECG
FBC
U+E - monitor K
Blood glucose
ABG
Coagulation
CXR
20
Q

What does ECG show

A

ST elevation

J wave

21
Q

How do you treat

A

Remove from cold
Warm with blanket
Secure airway and monitor breathing
Warm IV if not responding

22
Q

What does rapid rewarming lead to

A

Vasodilation and shock

When get cold hypothalamus release TSH and ACTH = constriction

23
Q

What does FBC show

A

Haematocrit and Hb increased

Platelet and WBC low due to hyposplenism
