Random Questions Flashcards
What is the difference between white and brown adipose tissue?
Brown - less common type of fat that is thermogenic
White - most abundant and non-thermogenic
What occurs during meiosis 1 vs meiosis 2?
Meiosis 1 - homologue pairs separate
Meiosis 2 - sister chromatids separate
What is crossing over?
Points where homologues cross over and exchange genetic material - more or less random
What is fermentation?
Breaking down of glucose in the absence of oxygen
Process of reducing pyruvate to either ethanol or lactate to regenerateNAD+ from NADH
What are two examples of the fermentation process?
Reduction of pyruvate to ethanol (alcohol fermentation)
Reduction of pyruvate to lactate en human muscle cells
What are the steps of alcohol fermentation?
Step #1: removes a carboxyl group from pyravate that produces acetaldehyde
Step #2: NADH passing its electrons to acetyldehyde which regenerates NAD+ and forms ethanol
*alcohol dehydrogenase is the enzyme that converts acetaldehyde to ethanol
What is lactic acid fermentation?
When oxygen supplies are running low, many prokaryotes and eukaryotes use lactic acid fermentation to regenerate NAD+
* lactate dehydrogenase is the enzyme that catalyzes this process converting pyruvate to lactate
