Q

John Duns Scotus

A

John Duns Scotus OFM (c. 1265/66 – 8 November 1308
The doctrines for which he is best known are the “univocity of being”, that existence is the most abstract concept we have, applicable to everything that exists; the formal distinction, a way of distinguishing between different aspects of the same thing; and the idea of haecceity, the property supposed to be in each individual thing that makes it an individual. Scotus also developed a complex argument for the existence of God, and argued for the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

39
Q
  1. Why is a sacrament called a “sealing ordinance?”
A

Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace, immediately instituted by God…to confirm our interest in Him…

40
Q
  1. Explain how a sacrament is a sign and seal of the Covenant of Grace
A

Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace, immediately instituted by God, to represent Christ and His benefits; and to confirm our interest in Him: as also, to put a visible difference between those that belong unto the Church and the rest of the world; and solemnly to engage them to the service of God in Christ, according to His Word.

41
Q
  1. What are the parts of the sacrament?
A

The two aspects are the outward visible sign and the inward spiritual grace thereby signified.

42
Q
  1. How would you handle a request for baptism from a previously baptized Roman Catholic? Mormon?
A

This is a fair position to take. However, your answer could be interpreted as leaning towards the Baptist position, i.e., what makes the baptism credible/efficacious is the profession of faith and the church administering that baptism. To put it another way, would I be right in thinking that a Southern Baptist baptism is just as flawed as the RCC baptism?

43
Q
  1. Why do we baptize infants?
A

Give a defense from Scripture. Infant baptism or household baptism is to be understood in light of the Covenant Theology. Since the beginning God as established His covenant not with a single individual only but also with their household. In Gen. 17 we find the Lord making a covenant with Abraham and giving to Hirn, to all the males of his household and their posterity the sign of circumcision. The sign and seal of the circumcision (Rom 4:11) pointed to the coming of the Christ who would give his body and shed His blood to redeem his people. It also sealed membership in the covenant community, therefore, all the household, infants or adults were to receive the sign of the circumcision. In the NT we find Jesus himself changing the sign of membership in the New Covenant from circumcision to baptism with water in the name of the Trinity, but not the substance of it (Mat 28:19, Acts 2:39, Rom 2, Col 2:11-21). Therefore, the apostles correctly understood that the promises of God are for members of the covenant, their Children and baptized the infant of such as are members of the visible church. (Acts 2, 10, 16, 18)

The promise is for you and your children. Acts 2:39

44
Q
  1. What is your view of the presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper?
A

Christ is sacramentally present with his people when we feed upon him by faith, not in a carnal or corporal manner by spiritually as the WCF says that Jesus is “but spiritually, present to the faith of believers in that ordinance.” 1 Cor 10:1-4 and 16

For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

16The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), 1 Co 10:16–17.
