Random Errors Flashcards
The arithmetic average of the population. The true mean for the entire population.
Population Mean
Representing the arithmetic average of the sample
Sample Mean
Represents a standard deviation calculated as a weighted average from multiple subsets of data from one population.
Pooled Standard Deviation
The square of the standard deviance
Variance
A bell-shaped curve produced when a very large number of individual errors are plotted.
Gaussian Curve or Normal Error Curve
The difference between the lowest and the highest data points in a set and results from an accumulation of all random uncertainties in the experiment.
Spread
Produced when results fall into one of two categories, success or failure.
Binomial Distribution
Subsets of populations.
Sample
Defined by the experimenter and represent all measurements of interest.
Population
Rqepresent the data values obtained in an analysis or experiment.
Variables
Qualities that define a population or distribution.
Parameters
An estimate of a parameter made from a sample of data.
Statistic
A measure of the precision of the population.
Population Standard Deviation
Indicates the number of independent results that enter into the computation of the standard deviation.
Degrees of Freedom
An estimate of the population variance
