Random Flashcards
What is bioavailability (F)?
Fraction of the administered dose of drug that reaches the systemic circulation.
What is clearance?
Volume of plasma “cleared” of drug per unit time eg. Lh-1 or mlmin-1.
What is a drug receptor?
A macromolecular component of a cell with which a drug interacts to produce a response. Usually a protein.
What kind of drug receptor are there?
1) Enzyme linked. 2) Ion channel 3) GPCR 4) Nuclear (gene) linked
What is affinity?
Measure of propensity of a drug to bind to its receptor; the attractiveness of a drug and receptor.
What is efficacy?
Ability of a bound drug to change the receptor in a way that produces an effect; some drugs possess affinity but NOT efficacy.
What drugs should you avoid prescribing to patients with renal disease?
Metformin and NSAIDs.
