What is alcohol use disorder?

A

“a chronic relapsing brain disease characterised by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake ad a negative emotional state when not using.”

What is delirium tremens?

A

Serious alcohol withdrawal state that occurs 1-3 days after alcohol cessation. Patients are disorientated, agitated and have marked tremor and visual hallucinations (eg. insects or small animals coming menacingly towards them). Medical emergency. Treated with benzodiazepines.

What is binge drinking?

A

The NHS defines binge drinking as “drinkinglots of alcohol in a short space of time or drinking to get drunk”. The definition used by the Office of National Statistics for binge drinking is having over 8 units in a single session for men and over 6 units per women.

A

A

Childs-Turcotte-Pugh score. Grade A:5-7 ‘mild’. Grade B: 7-9 ‘moderate’. Grade C” 10-15 ‘severe’.
