Describe the elections of Rajya Sabha.
They are representatives of the states elected by the legislative assembly. Representatives of union territories are chosen based on rules laid down by the parliament.
Describe the term of Rajya Sabha.
It is a permanent house and cannot be dissolved.
1/3 of its members retire every 2 years and an equal number of members replace them.
Ordinary, the term of Rajya Sabha is 6 years.
Who is the presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha?
The vice president becomes the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha. As they are not a member of the Rajya Sabha, they cannot vote on the issue but can exercise a casting vote in case of tie. The deputy chairman is seperayely elected by the Rajya Sabha among one of its members.
Why is the opinion of the Rajya Sabha needed to prevent hasty passing of the bill?
Its members try to reflect interests of the states that they represent.
