Rainforest Flashcards
Soil
Reddish brown - red color come from the oxide of al and fe
Nutrients only stay in the soil for a short time
Heavy rain -> leaching of mineral
Vegetation level
Emergent Canopy Lower canopy Shrub layer Forest floor
Adaptation
Tall trees have wide, shallow roots
Buttress root
Straight trunks, leaves and branches concentrated at the top
Lianas - grow up the tree trunks and use them to get sunlight
Parasitic plants (orchid) grow in cracks in the branches high up in the canopy
Trees are evergreen
Drip tip leaves - not damages by large quantities of water
Human activity
Logging
Ranching - destroy to make way for grazing land
Mining - iron orem bauxite
Farming - plant crop, sugarcane,..
Climate
Hot, humid
Hot throughout the year, temperature range : 25 -30
Massive level of precipitation : 2000 - 3000 - rain all year, monthly amount varies
Convectional rainfall - bc close to the equator -> hot -> warm up land -> evaporation and transpiration -> convection
Days start warm and then temp. And humidity build up
By the afternoon, air is saturated -> intense rainstorms -> keep the forest moist
