Plate Tectonic Flashcards

1
Q

Mantle

A

Layer of molten magma - plates float on the mantle

Convection move these plates away towards or alongside each other

Q

Describe constructive margin

A

Convection current drag the plates apart
Edges of the plates pushed up by the convection currents to form ridges
Magma rises to fill the gap and solidifies to form new crust
Not large build of friction -> earthquake are only gentle
Volcanoes created

Q

Describe destructive margin

A

Oceanic and continental plate collide
Oceanic plate denser -> sinks under the other
It takes some sand, water and other material from the sea bed with it
These melt, creating fas which is force to go up the surface of volcanoes
Oceanic plate melts due to hear and friction -> rise a magma
Continental plate crumples at the edge creating fold mountains
Violent volcanoes and earthquake

Q

Describe collision margin

A

Convection current -> 2 continental plate pull together
Same material -> same density -> crumple up -> fold mountain -> force down -> mountain root
No volcanoes bc no plate is being destroyed
Earthquake due to massive build up of pressure and friction

Q

Conservative margin

A

Two continental plates move alongside
Not being force up or down -> no major landforms
Crust is not being destroyed -> no volcanoes
Huge build up of friction and pressure -> massive earthquake

Q

Why live near volcanoes

A

Fertile land for farming - lava breaks down -> most fertile soil on earth
Tourism
Unaware
Cheap land, cant afford to move
Resources: sulphur and other mineral can be mined
Family live here along time
Geothermal power along the plate edges - cheap and clean power
Beautiful landscape

Q

Why live near earthquake

A

Poor - force to live here
Overpopulation
Live here all their life -> unwilling to move
Major one happen infrequently, prepare to take risk, dont think that 1 will occur in their time
Building improve, withstand strong earthquake
Geothermal power

A

Surface of the earth

Collection of solid tectonic plates that join together like a jigsaw puzzle
