Raine Et Al Flashcards
Aims
To discover any brain structure differences between those who committed crimes(NGRIS) and those who did not commit crimes
IV
Ppts matched on sex , age , ethnicity
Natural experienent
Sample
41 ppts - 39 males ,2 women
41 ppts in control
Ppts had a series of brain damage, schizophrenia, epilepsy
Control group had no mental illnesses except 6 that had schizophrenia
Process
Conducted in uni of california , ppts were injected with glucose tracer then made to do a CPT for 10 minutes
A PET scan was rhen taken
Findings
Damage to prefrontal cortex- rational thinking, self restraint
Damage to parietal love - abstract thinking such as morality , justice
Linbic systen- more damages to the right hand side than the left which is correlated with aggressioj
Conclusions
Prefrontal deficits - making it harder with self control much more impulsive , and emotional
Lnbic system deficits - makes a person much more aggressive
Amygdala when imbalanced correlated with higher levels of aggression
Thalamus- processing information, hippocampus- processing memory
Maling it harder to then learn from mistakes
Parietal love deficits- lack of judgement and morality, having it difficult to be able to make social judgements , more likely to overreact from social situations

Support
High generalisability
High sample size to the point where anomalies wouldnt have much of an affect, showing representativeness
High control over all variables
Negatives
However ppts were NGRIs, people who showed confusion while in trual or don’t rneneber murdering this isnt a good representation of those who commit violence or of all murders , showing a lack of reliability
Negative.2
Raine admits that there were issues with the PET scan
Was left to intrepretation showing subjectivity, this can affect the experiment as itd show low reliability
