Radiology Safety Flashcards
When will someone have to go through refresher radiology safety training?
Someone who received a whole body dose of 100 mrem or more during the previous calendar year
X ray energy & penetration?
They have very short wavelengths so they are very energetic & penetrating
X-ray and most occupational radiation exposure?
Scattering
Radiation Absorbed Dose - defined
Amount of energy transferred from a source of ionizing radiation to any material (including human tissue)
1 rem = how many mrem
1000
Is background radiation recorded as part of the occupational radiation dose record?
No- that would be what is found int he atmosphere/food
What does the extent & risk of radiation induced damage depend on?
Total amount of radiation energy absorbed, rate of exposure, parts of body exposed (thyroid/lens of eye more sensitive), age of individual (minors more sensitive)
Occupational exposure limits for radiation
500 mrem for whole body
50,000 mrem for extremity
15,000 mrem for lens of eye
100 mrem for pregnancy
Whole body dosimeter type
Used to record deep dose exposure- worn on torso beneath lead apron- has a dot on the thorax and the little person is black
Collar dosimeter type
Used to record radiation dose to lens of eye, shallow skin dose & unshielded portion of whole body- worn on collar external to lead, has a little dot on the neck and the little person is red
Fetal Dosimeter
Issued to DECLARED pregnant workers, worn at waist level beneath lead apron- has little baby pictures on person
Biggest cause for radiation at UIHC
Fluroscopy cause a lot of scatter at very high rates
