What fluid and soft tissue do in a CT scan?
Allows passage of sound waves
Fluid- black
Soft tissue- white
What does air and bone do in a CT scan?
Blocks passage of sound waves
Shadow
CXR PA technique
- Patient stands 2m away from x- ray apparatus
- Shoulders braced forward to prevent scapulae obscuring lungs
- Radiograph taken at full inspiration
- PA view minimizes magnification of cardiac shadow
CXR AP technique?
- Cassette is placed behind patient and X rays pass from A to P
- Used on wards
How is AP CXR inferior to PA?
1) Heart shadow is magnified in AP, heart size can’t be assessed accurately
2) Scapulae overlie and partly obscure the lungs
3) Difficult for patient to take adequate inspiration when lying down
Before you start analyzing CXR?
Check patient’s name and CHI
Check to see if there are side markers
Check the ‘ions’- Inspiration, Rotation, Penetration
If a CXR is adequately inspired…?
The anterior ends of at least 6 ribs should be visible
If a CXR is correctly centred?
The medial ends pf the clavicles should be equidistant from the spinous processes of the upper thoracic vertebrae
Mediastinal Borders?
Aorta Pulmonary Artery Left auricle Left ventricle Right atrium Trachea Hemidiaphragm Stomach bubble Horizontal fissure
