Radiography Flashcards
Define Radiation
Energy carried by waves or streams of particles
Define X-radiation
High energy radiation produced by the collision of a beam of electrons with a metal target in an X-ray tube (fast waves)
X-radiation produces x-rays (photons)
Define X-ray/photons
A beam of energy that has the power to penetrate substances and record image shadows on photographic films
Define Radiology
The science or study of radiation as used in medicine; a branch of medical studies that deals with the use of x-rays, radioactive substances, and other forms of radiant energy in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
Define Radiograph
A visible photographic record on film produced by the passage of x-rays through an object or body; also called x-ray film
Acceptable names for radiographic images
X-ray films
Radiographs
Dental Radiographs
Define Dental Radiograph
A photographic image produced on film by the passage of x-rays through teeth and related structures
Define Radiography
The art and science of making radiographs by the exposure of film to x-rays
Define Dental Radiography
The production of radiographs of the teeth and adjacent structures by the exposure of film to x-rays
Define Dental Radiographer
A person who positions, exposes, and processes x-ray film
Define Image
A picture or likeness of an object
Define Image Receptor
A recording medium; examples include x-ray film, phosphor plate, or digital sensor
Define Imaging, Dental
The creation of digital, print, or film representations of anatomic structures for the purpose of diagnosis
Why are Dental Images so important?
Dental images enable to dental professional to identify many conditions that may otherwise go undetected and to see conditions that cannot be identified clinically
Many dental diseases and conditions have no clinical signs or symptoms
Name 3 Uses of Dental Images
Detect lesions Confirm or classify suspected disease Localize lesions or foreign objects Provide information during dental procedures Evaluate growth and development Illustrate changes secondary to caries, periodontal disease, trauma Document the condition of a patient Aid in developing a treatment plan
Who discovered x-rays and how?
Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, he was experimenting with vacuum tubes and fluorescent screens and noticed the screens were glowing even though they were several feet from the tube. After replacing the fluorescent screens with photographic plates, he was able to permanently capture images.
Who was Heinrich Geissler?
Built the first vacuum tube, his tubes were used in the making of neon lighting
Who was Johann Hittorf?
Used the vacuum tube to study fluorescence, was also the first scientist to calculate the electric capacity of ions
Who was William Crookes?
Discovered that cathode rays were streams of charged particles. Made many discoveries with tubes, including one that led to the discovery of TV tubes
Who was Philip Lenard?
Discovered that cathode rays could penetrate a thin window made of aluminum foil. It is thought that he may have discovered x-rays if he had used more sensitive fluorescent screens
Who was Otto Walkhoff?
Made the first dental radiograph by exposing his own mouth on a radiographic plate for 25 minutes and using mannequins
Who was W.J. Morton?
Made the first radiograph using a skull. In team with Thomas Edison, gave warning of the adverse effects of x-rays.
Who was C. Edmund Kells?
Exposed the first dental radiograph in the US using a living person. Later developed cancerous tumours in his fingers, hands and his arm from working with x-rays everyday
Also introduced paralleling technique
Who was William H. Rollands?
Developed the first dental x-ray UNIT
Who was Frank Van Woert?
First to use film in intraoral radiography
Who was Howard Riley Raper?
Established the first college course in radiography for dental students
Redefined original bisecting technique and introduced the bite-wing technique
Who was Eastman Kodak?
Manufactured prewrapped intraoral film, before that, hand-wrapped photographic glass or film were used. Light cannot pass through film packs but x-rays can
Who was Weston Price?
Invented the bisecting technique
