Q
why was radio 1 not a success initially?
A
- in 1967 radio 1 was not as popular as the bbc had hoped
- it was not seen as ‘cool’ by young people as bbc was traditional
- it struggled financially as there was no increase in the licence fee to pay for extra radio station
- had a more formal style so young people didnt respond positively
- radio 1 had to follow the bbc to provide information and eduate so young people rejected
- people worried that too much radio music meant they would no longer buy records so ‘needle time’ meant they could play 5 hours of music per day
