Radiation Transfers Thermal Energy Flashcards
What is radiation?
Transfer of thermal energy via photons across an empty space of through another substance.
Is radiation only absorbed when it meets a substance?
No, it is also reflected and transmitted.
Give an example of radiation.
Radiation from the sun is transmitted through the atmosphere, absorbed by the ground and reflected from the tops of the clouds.
Does every object have the ability to radiate energy?
Yes, in one or more forms depending on the temperature,
Give an example of an object that radiates energy.
- Electric radiators radiate energy in the form of infrared radiations.
- An incandescent globe radiates some visible light and infrared radiation.
What is one thing in common of radiation of any type?
All can be produced just by heating things up to the right temperature.
Can radiation be produced in ways other than heating?
Yes, for example radio waves are produced by transmitters, and light can be produced in a fluorescent tube.
What does large exposure to radiation do to a human or animal?
It kills them.
Does radiation heat waves travel in a wavy or straight line?
Straight
Does the fire need to reach and come in contact with an object to catch on fire?
No, the radiation can heat it so much by itself that it will catch on fire.
Can the human cooling regulation cope with this much heat and radiation?
No it can’t.
