Potential Energy Is Stored Energy Flashcards
What is potential energy?
Energy stored in objects that’s waiting to be used.
Can potential energy be stored in many forms?
Yes.
What is stored energy a result of?
A change in shape or an object’s height above the ground.
Name an example of elastic potential energy.
Trampoline, a coil, a slinky.
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored through stretching or squashing. For example a rubber band.
What objects is EPE stored in?
An object that has changed in shape.
What is gravitational potential energy?
Energy stored in an object that is high above the ground.
Does lifting an object increase of decrease GPE?
Increase
As an object falls, is the object’s GPE transformed or transferred?
Transformed
What is an example of GPE?
When a person plays on the slide at the playground. The higher they climb, the more GPE they get. When they slide down, the GPE decreases. The person gains kinetic energy. They may also feel a zap of electrical energy.
What is chemical potential energy?
Energy stored in chemicals, e.g. food, fuels or explosives.
Do devices such as explosives or batteries contain CPE?
Yes, it is released when we need it.
What types of foods release stored chemical energy quickly when we need it? E.g. after a workout.
Mainly sweet foods.
What is nuclear energy?
Energy stored in the nucleus/centre of an atom.
Do these atoms release large or small amounts of energy?
Atoms usually only release small amounts of energy but if the nucleus of the atom is made to react, the amount of energy is released is much larger.
